Unless you’ve been living under a rock for a few months, you’re probably aware that Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson quickly became Hollywood’s “It Couple” this past summer. And unless you’ve been living under a rock for a few days, you’re probably aware that the couple has recently broken off their engagement.
This news is hardly surprising when considering how quickly the pair got together, and especially considering the recent passing of Mac Miller. Miller was a famous rapper who dated Grande, and his death was most likely caused by a drug overdose.
However, while some are sobbing over the breakup, some are celebrating. Personally, I am on the latter. Sure, they were “cute” and all, but Ariana Grande deserves way better than Pete Davidson. Here’s why.
For starters, unless you watched SNL, did you even know who this guy was before he started dating Ariana? No, you didn’t, don’t even lie. I recognized him, sure, but did I know his name? No. From the outside looking in, it almost appears as though Pete used the artist’s name to help him climb up the celebrity totem pole. I’m not saying that was the only reason he pursued a relationship with her, or that famous people can only date people as equally famous, but how weird does it look? Before Ariana Grande, you wouldn’t know who Pete Davidson was if he went up to you in the street and shouted his name in your face.
Not only that, but I’ve seen countless memes on Twitter regarding Pete’s future financial situation. The internet is buzzing about what little he’ll have left now that he doesn’t have Ariana to piggyback off of. Sure, he’s made some money, but his ex-fiance has more zero’s in her back account than he ever well.
Instead of defending his name, Davidson is really just adding fuel to the fire. On September 29th, the SNL “star” made a joke during the episode regarding Ariana’s wealth:
“God forbid we split up, she takes half my sneakers. I’m totally comfortable being with a successful woman. I live at her place. She pays, like, sixty grand for rent and all I have to do is stock the fridge,” he said laughing. He continues by making fun of a topic that should not be made light of. “Last night, I switched her birth control with Tic Tacs. I believe in us and all, but you know, I just want to make sure that she can’t go anywhere.”
Okay, Pete. So you’d force your girlfriend to stay with you? Isn’t that mental abuse? And let’s say this wasn’t a joke. Did you not just admire how wealthy Ariana is? If she’s so successful, then why would she need to stay with you in the first place when she can clearly support herself? She would be the one giving birth, not you….
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it does.
On September 28th, Davidson responded to events that occured during Aretha Franklin’s August funeral in an interview with Howard Stern. Many associate the service with Grande’s performance, and with the accusation that Bishop Charles H. Ellis III groped the singer.
“It’s not cool and I feel really bad. We both don’t think that was intentional. He’s a really tall guy, she’s very little.”
The interview with Stern then proceeds to address the incident regarding former president Bill Clinton. Pictures surfaced showing Clinton eyeing Grande throughout her rendition during the funeral. Pete’s response?
“I’ve never been more proud. I love that. I was honored. I would never be more honored,” he laughs.
Red flags, anyone? Like, are you kidding me? This 72-year-old man, who was once the leader of our country, who is supposed to be extremely professional at all times, who cheated on his wife with his intern, is gawking at your girlfriend, and your first reaction isn’t complete disgust? What kind of boyfriend are you? You’re just as much as a threat to her as him, or any other old white male that looks at her that way.
It would almost be better for you to remain silent, but you even go as far as applauding the former president. “I was honored.” Were you now, Pete? You were honored? You praised Clinton? You celebrated his repulsive actions? The actions he participated in when seated right next to his wife?
Words can’t describe the remorse I feel for his ex, or how livid I would be if I was in her situation.
As far as Ariana’s mental health goes, she seems to be doing okay. Not great, but okay.
After the Manchester Arena bombing, after the death of her beloved ex-boyfriend, after the release of her fourth album, Sweetener, after this breakup, Ariana Grande needs a break. She needs time to herself, and she needs to heal, and Pete’s presence will not benefit her.
Maybe he was a good boyfriend to her in private, but in public, he’s said extremely personal and vulgar things about her. Regardless of whether it was for laughs or shock factor, Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson were going to get married. If she was going to be his wife, he should respect her and admire her for more than physical beauty.
As far as the breakup goes, Ariana is thriving:
And as for Pete, not so much:
